Pet Research Part 4- All about Reptiles

According to Merriam-Webster, a reptile is a "Cold-blooded, air-breathing, usually egg-laying vertebrate that includes alligators, crocodiles, lizards, snakes, turtles, and extinct dinosaurs. They have a body that is typically covered in scales."

The lifespan of reptiles varies depending on which animal you get. A King Snake has an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years; a Leopard Gecko has an average lifespan of about 20 years, and a Leopard Tortoise has an average lifespan of 50+ years.

Some reptiles have very specific needs and you need to do research before you get a reptile because it can affect their health and happiness if they don't get what they require. Some reptiles can grow very big, so make sure you know what you're getting into and that you have the proper equipment and space for your new pet.

Even though it is not necessary for survival, it is highly recommended to get UVB/UVA light bulbs for reptiles because it is said to help improve their eating habits, increase their immune system. UVB bulbs should be replaced every 12 months.

When buying a cage, make sure you buy an escape-proof cage because reptiles can escape with ease. When you're holding your reptile, don't hold them too high up just in case they jump from your hands and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly.

Most of the time your reptile will be in a cage and since they don't require to be walked they are the perfect pet if you don't have an active lifestyle.
