Upkeeps and cost

Having pets can get quite expensive but the cost of owning a pet varies depending on where you live.

In Florida, an average vet visit for a routine check-up can cost anywhere from $50 to $250 (depends on which part of Florida you're from). But that doesn't include (for the most part) vaccines; unexpected costs like bloodwork, Xrays, and etc.; or surgery.

The average cost for tests and other veterinary care (for cats and dogs) is:
  • Routine Check-up: $50 to $250
  • Spay/Neuter: $160 to $220
  • Vaccines (per shot): $15 to $28
  • Physical exams: $45 to $50
  • Fecal exam: $25 to $45
  • Heartworm test: $45 to $50
  • Dental cleaning: $70 to $400
  • Allergy testing: $195 to $300
  • Geriatric testing: $85 to $110
  •  Bloodwork: $80 to $200
  • X-rays: $150 to $250
  • Ultrasounds: $300 to $600
  • Short hospitilizations: $600 to $1,700
  • Long hospitilizations: $1,500 to $3,500
  • Wound treatment: $800 to $2,500
  • Emergency surgery: $1,500 to $5,000
  • Oxygen therapy: $500 to $3,000

There are of course other costs such as treatments for certain infections and pain management. Those costs also come extra aside from everything else. I'm not going to list everything but in cats growth/lumps/cancer can cost up to $15,000 and in dogs, it can cost up to $6,000.

There are other costs as well to owning a pet that has nothing to do with going to the vet. You have to buy food for your pet, you have to buy toys, beds, etc. For reptiles and amphibians, you have to buy a good escape proof cage which is quite expensive. You have to buy special UVB lights and replace those every 12 months.
